About Us

In 2006, the Jewish Community Havura was established to serve St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the surrounding area.

The Havura began with a group of Jews who were interested in developing an inclusive and egalitarian community with programmes and services to accommodate different approaches to Judaism, as well as a commitment to social justice. Since 2006, our membership has grown and our programmes and services have multiplied.

The Jewish Community Havura hosts biweekly Shabbat services and pot-luck dinners , as well as events related to festivals and Holy Days. Held in members’ homes, our Shabbat services use Reform prayer books.  Short but joyous, our services provide a chance to reflect on the week that was.  Children are especially welcome: On select Fridays, we hold shorter children’s Shabbat services.  Geared to younger members, these are open to the entire community.

Succot, Chanukah, Purim, Simchat Torah and Passover are particularly festive times for the Havura and its members. We also host services on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

In cooperation with the Atlantic Jewish Council, the Jewish Community Havura organizes an annual Holocaust Memorial observance in the spring. Children and youth are welcome. The Jewish Community Havura prepares girls and boys for Bat and Bar Mitzvahs.

Our outreach activities include speakers for schools and other faith groups, as well as adult education and occasional lectures, films, and concerts.  Engaging with other faith communities, we participate in the annual Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue.

We engage in social justice issues through the Religious Social Action Coalition (RSAC).  Now in its tenth year, the RSAC unites faith and multi-faith communities in a shared commitment to reduce and eliminate poverty in Newfoundland and Labrador.
